DSNY Art Show

We started with a simple mission. We wanted to humanize our workforce and celebrate their talents. The men and women of our Department are on the front lines every day working tirelessly to keep our city healthy, safe and clean. It's rare we take the time to get to know the person behind the collection truck. We want to change that.

2020 Fall Virtual Show

With nearly 10,000 employees, we want to celebrate how talented the NYC Department of Sanitation workforce is. In the fall of 2020, we debuted over 20 employee artists in a virtual exhibition sponsored by Mack Trucks.

2021 In-Person Exhibition

In the fall of 2021, we are taking this exhibition to an in-person format, while also incorporating pieces from DSNY Artist in Resident Mierle Laderman Ukeles and Nelson Molina’s “Treasures in the Trash” collection.

2020 People’s Choice Winner:

Brooklyn’s Kenny Abel

Kenny is a retired Sanitation Worker, who hopes “to raise awareness about the dangers of sanitation work.” He painted his winning piece as a tribute to the late Sanitation Worker Stephen Frosch, who was tragically injured and sadly passed away while on the job on June 21, 2014.

Thank you to Kenny, to all of the DSNY artists who participated in our first-ever digital Art Show, and to everyone who voted!

A group of internal and external experts came together to judge art based on creativity and skill to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
